March 21, 2008
GAME 1 BOXSCORE

GAME 2 BOXSCORE

Wise, Va. – Good Friday didn’t turn out to be that at all for the UVa-Wise softball team as 20 th-ranked Georgetown College swept a doubleheader, 8-0 and 6-3, behind one big inning in each game.

Mary Wilson (Va. Beach, Va.) paced the Lady Cavs (4-6) by going four for six with a double. Christine Cantone (Va. Beach, Va.) and Candace Winslow (Chesapeake, Va.) doubled as part of both having two hits. Britney Lawson (Duffield, Va.) added two singles and Shelley Newton (Chesapeake, Va.) one.

Game 1

After a scoreless opening frame, the Lady Tigers (16-6) put together six singles and a walk to spur a four run trip to the plate. The visitors went into total control in the top of the third. With two outs and a runner on, Sarah Gronfeld homered to center to extend the margin to 6-0.

Cantone had a leadoff double in the home third and Winslow singled up the middle in the fourth but neither UVa-Wise player could score. Georgetown added two more tallies on a Jennifer Tarpee two-run home run in the top of the fifth to make it 8-0. Wilson led off the Lady Cavs fifth with a double down the right field line but was stranded at third back as the game ended 8-0 due to the run rule after five.

Samantha Barmore allowed two hits and Victoria Witt one double as part of the combined three-hitter for Georgetown.

Game 2

The Lady Tigers pushed across a single run in the top of the first. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth. Winslow doubled to lead off to left center and Wilson singled to put two runners on. Two batters later, Lawson singled both runners home for the first UVa-Wise lead of the day at 2-1.

In the home fifth with two outs, Newton singled through the left side, Winslow walked and Wilson singled to right to load the bases. Cantone followed with a run-scoring hit to center for a 3-1 lead.

The lead would turn out to be short lived as Georgetown would post its second big frame of the day. Following a single and walk, Whitney Ealey lined a hit up the middle but made its way past two Lady Cavs defenders to the fence for a triple to plate both runners to tie the contest, 3-3. Ealey scored on a UVa-Wise fielding error before Kara Renfro belted a two-run home run to complete a five-run trip to the plate for a 6-3 tally.

Lady Tigers’ relief pitcher Samantha Wilson allowed just one Lady Cavs runner, a walk, over the final two innings to complete the 6-3 comeback victory.

Wilson posted a three for four game while Lawson had both her hits in the late game.

UVa-Wise will have the weekend off before hosting NCAA Division II foe Tusculum College on Monday afternoon starting at 2:00 p.m.
