Newton and Ridenour Named All-Region Softball

New Albany, Ind. – One four-time and a newcomer Lady Cav were named to the NAIA All-Region XII softball team announced this morning. UVa-Wise saw senior Shelley Newton earn the honor for the fourth-straight season while freshman Maddi Ridenour make her inaugural appearance.
The two players are on the campus of Indiana University-Southeast in New Albany, Ind. as the UVa-Wise softball team takes part in its eighth-straight NAIA Region XII tournament. The Lady Cavs (26-17) are the second seed and face sixth-seed Tennessee Wesleyan in a 4:00 p.m. affair.
Newton, the Appalachian Athletic Conference Player of the Year, has led the Lady Cavs for the fourth year in a row. The catcher has received All-AAC and All-Region each of the past four seasons. The Chesapeake, Va. native has a .368 average to go with 12 doubles, six homers and 38 rbi.
Ridenour has burst onto the scene in 2008. The freshman center fielder adds the All-Region honor after being named to her first All-AAC team last Wednesday. The Suffolk, Va. product leads the Lady Cavs with a .453 average, 62 hits, 45 runs, five triples, 20 walks and 33 stolen bases. The Nansemond River High grad has drove in 15 runs from her leadoff spot.
