Trio of Lady Cavs Selected VaSID All-State Second Team

Emory, Va. – The UVa-Wise softball team saw catcher Shelley Newton and outfielders Maddi Ridenour and Britney Lawson selected to the VaSID All-State College Division Second team voted on by the state’s collegiate sports information directors.
The trio helped the Lady Cavs to a solid year of 29-19 and runner-up finishes in both the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season and NAIA Region XII championships.
Newton, a senior from Chesapeake, Va., finished her career with her second all-state honors after being the AAC Player of the Year as well as All-AAC and NAIA All-Region XII four times. She hit .379 with six homers and 42 rbi on the 2008 season.
Lawson returns for her second placing on the all-state squad. Lawson led all College Division softball players with 27 extra base hits. For the second year, the junior from Duffield, Va. earned All-AAC honors. She hit .386, 11 doubles, five triples, 11 home runs and 42 rbi.
Freshman Ridenour (Suffolk, Va.) was named the program’s first NAIA All-American honoree by making the second team. The first-year player added All-AAC and NAIA All-Region XII honors to her year’s awards. She hit an AAC best .433 with 68 hits and 36 stolen bases.
