Late Runs Allows Ind.-Southeast to Defeat UVa-Wise Softball

New Albany, Ind. – Leading 3-2, UVa-Wise committed two costly errors to allow Indiana-Southeast to edge out a 4-3 victory in the softball NAIA Region XII Tournament on Friday afternoon.

The loss puts the Lady Cavs (27-18) into the loser’s bracket final where they will be pitted against Union College, who defeated Mountain State 5-4, in a 10:00 a.m. Saturday affair. Host Indiana-Southeast will await the winner of the Union-UVa-Wise game at 12:00 p.m.

Christine Cantone doubled and singled for UVa-Wise at the plate. Maddi Ridenour added two singles. Bobbi Mihelarakis, Shelley Newton, Hannah Ellis and Melanie Sutherland had one hit apiece.

UVa-Wise broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the second. Cantone and Ellis started the trip to the plate with singles. Sutherland followed with a run-scoring hit. Sarah Frazier drove in the second run on a fielder’s choice before Ridenour singled home the final tally of the frame for a 3-0 lead.

The Grenadiers (32-10) scored once in the second and again in the fourth against Lady Cavs’ starter Lauren Snead. The home team produced the key scores in the bottom of the fifth compliments of two UVa-Wise errors to go in front 4-3. The Lady Cavs could not produce a run in their final two at bats to fall by the same 4-3 final.
