St. Paul , Va. – The fourth 2008-09 future Lady Cavs softball player was signed last week in St. Paul’s Brittany Russell.
Russell joins a UVa-Wise squad which has won the past four Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season crowns and two of the last three NAIA Region XII titles. The Lady Cavs have had a tough start to the 2008 season at 4-6 but will head back for a new week starting on Tuesday afternoon when they host Tusculum College starting at 2:00 p.m.
“She has the potential to come in and make an immediate impact as a baserunner with her great speed and will compete for a starting role in the outfield,” tells Lady Cavs’ head coach Tori Raby-Gentry.
The center fielder earned All-Cumberland District, All-Region D and All-Southwest Virginia First team honors last year. She also picked up All-State honorable mention. Russell hit .274 with 28 runs scored, four doubles, a home run and eight rbi at the plate.
“Brittany has great speed, a solid arm, and good range,” add Raby-Gentry. “She is a left-handed hitter who we plan to make a slapper as well as a solid student.”
