Rocky Mount, Va. – Franklin County High’s Ashlee Washburn became the latest UVa-Wise softball signee. The senior shortstop and fifth Lady Cavs recruit will look to challenge for a spot in the 2009 infield.
The Rocky Mount, Va. product will join what is making out to be another solid class of incoming freshmen by UVa-Wise head coach Tori Raby-Gentry.
The Lady Cavs’ head coach has the 2008 team primed to extend its Appalachian Athletic Conference title run to five-straight this season. The squad is tied for the top spot in the league with a 13-3 mark and 25-15 record overall heading into the final regular pair of games at Mountain State Sunday afternoon.
“Ashlee is another great addition to the program. We are excited to be getting such a well-rounded student-athlete,” says Raby-Gentry. “Ashlee comes from a strong high school program and has played on some of the strongest travel teams in the area.”
At Franklin County High over the first nine games this year, Washburn connected on two home runs and lined a double in 30 at bats. Over her scholastic career, she has compiled a solid .338 average with 66 runs batted in. Ashlee also has hit .347 with 53 extra base hits in 190 at bats for some of her region’s top travel travel teams.
“She has great defensive skills and a solid bat, combine this with great game instinct-she will be somewhere in our infield next year,” explained the Lady Cavs coach.
Along with her solid softball skills, Washburn has a 3.95 GPA and plans to major in Biology.
