Cavaliers open season with split February 19 , 2005
GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- Junior Krystal Showers (Chester, Va./L.C. Bird High) went 2-for-4 and slugged a home run Saturday to lift UVa-Wise to a 7-6 game one victory over non-conference foe Georgetown (Ky.) College in the Cavaliers’ season opener in Georgetown, Ky. Senior ace Nichole Poore (Meadowview, Va./Patrick Henry High) picked up the victory in the opener. The Tigers, however, bounced back for a 10-5 win in the nightcap. Kendall Rainey (Glade Spring, Va./Patrick Henry High) had a hot bat for UVa-Wise in both games, getting six hits in nine trips to the plate. Freshman Shelly Newton (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch High) performed well in her first collegiate appearance, going 2-for-4 in the opener. The Cavaliers, now 1-1, open the gates to their new ballpark Thursday when they host Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Bluefield College. A doubleheader between the two squads is set for 2 p.m. at Cavalier Field.
