Lady Cavs up winning streak to 12 with sweep at Union

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - UVa-Wise junior Dani Benton (Virginia Beach, Va./Oscar Smith High) pitched seven shutout innings and struck out 12 Monday to lead the Lady Cavaliers to a 5-0 win in game one of a doubleheader against Appalachian Athletic Conference nemesis Union College in Barbourville, Ky.
The Cavaliers, now 13-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference, increased their current winning streak to 12 games with an impressive 10-1 blowout over the Bulldogs in the nightcap.
Benton improved her season record to 7-0 while allowing only three hits in the opener. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI.
Senior Kendall Rainey(Glade Spring, Va./Patrick Henry High) and junior Krystal Showers (Chester, Va./L.C. Bird High) each had a couple of hits for UVa-Wise.
Freshman Amanda Wheeler (Jonesborough, Tenn./Daniel Boone High) pitched four innings of relief for the game two victory, the first of her collegiate career.
Wheeler gave up four hits and a run after entering the game for starter Nichole Poore (Meadowview, Va./Patrick Henry High), who threw the first three innings before leaving with only one hit against her and the score tied at zero.
Showers blasted her team-leading third home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth. Meagan Jones (Gate City, Va./Gate City High) scored two runs in the AAC contest and had a double in the fifth.
Up next for UVa-Wise is a trip to Athens, Tenn., Saturday for an AAC doubleheader with Tennessee Wesleyan College.
The Lady Cavaliers return to their new ballpark, Cavalier Field, Wednesday, March 23, for a 2 p.m., twin bill with non-conference opponent Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) University.
