UVa-Wise crowns King in doubleheader sweep

WISE, Va. -- Alicia King’s (Castlewood, Va./Castlewood High) double in the bottom of the seventh inning sent Kendall Rainey(Glade Spring, Va./Patrick Henry High) home for the game-winning run, giving UVa-Wise a 2-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference win over King College in game one of a doubleheader Thursday at Cavalier Field.
The Lady Cavaliers, 21-6 overall and 14-2 in the conference, completed the double dip sweep in game two, winning 6-0 on a combined shutout by pitchers Nichole Poore (Meadowview, Va./Patrick Henry High), who earned the win, and Dani Benton (Virginia Beach, Va./Oscar Smith High).
Poore also earned the win in the opener after she relieved starter Amanda Wheeler (Jonesborough, Tenn./Daniel Boone High) with the score tied at 1-1.
Krystal Showers (Chester, Va./L.C. Bird High) gave the Cavaliers the early lead in the opening game with a monsterous home run to the deepest part of the ballpark in center field. The blast was the junior’s fifth home run of the season.
The Lady Cavaliers next travel to face Milligan College Sunday at Milligan College, Tenn. UVa-Wise returns to Cavalier Field Monday for a doubleheader with AAC rival Union College.
