Lady Cavs bully Buffs for doubleheader sweep
March 24, 2005
WISE, Va. -- Meagan Jones made history Thursday.
The sophomore’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning propelled UVa-Wise to a 4-0 win over Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Milligan (Tenn.) College at Cavalier Field.
Jones’s homer was the first by a UVa-Wise player at the Cavaliers’ new ballpark, which opened in late February. The win completed a sweep for the Lady Cavaliers over the Buffs.
In the opener, Jones’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth scored Kendall Rainey from third to give UVa-Wise a 3-2 extra-innings win.
Dani Benton pitched the Cavaliers to the game one victory, allowing a couple of runs on four hits while striking out eight Lady Buffs. Brandy Waddle suffered the loss for Milligan.
Nichole Poore shutout Milligan in the nightcap. The senior struck out six Buffs and allowed no walks in the game.
In addition to the blast by Jones, Shelley Newton also went deep with a two-run shot in the finale, giving Milligan’s Traci Harrison the loss. The sweep over Milligan lifts the Lady Cavaliers to 18-5 overall and 12-2 in the AAC.
UVa-Wise next plays Tuesday on the road at non-conference rival Pikeville College.
