WISE, VA - While snow and rain in Wise continues to halt the UVa-Wise softball team’s home schedule, the Lady Cavaliers did manage to get in a couple of Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheaders over the weekend.
UVa-Wise pounded homestanding Montreat (N.C.) College Friday, winning 6-1 in the opener and 4-0 in the nightcap. Dani Benton went the distance in the pitching circle in game one, striking out seven Montreat batters while allowing only four hits.
Senior Kendall Rainey went 2-for-3 in the game and stole a base. Krystal Showers hit her second home run of the season.
In game two, senior Nichole Poore earned the win, throwing three innings of one-hit softball. Freshman Amanda Wheeler finished the final four innings and allowed Montreat only four hits in the shutout victory.
Benton and Poore did equal damage Saturday in a sweep on the road at Brevard (N.C.) College. Benton’s (2-0) three-hitter in the opener paced the Cavaliers to a 5-2 win. Rainey, Terri-Ann Hill, Sarah Frazier and Alicia King each had multiple hits.
Poore (2-0) struck out four in a 3-1 game two win over the Tornados. Rainey had a couple of doubles and Showers and Ashley Addington each went 2-for-4 at the plate.
The four weekend wins put the Lady Cavaliers at 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the AAC.
