Lady Cavs split showdown with conference rival
March 19, 2005
ATHENS, Tenn. - Dani Benton (Virginia Beach, Va./Oscar Smith High) improved her season record to 8-0 Saturday, pitching UVa-Wise to a 3-0 victory over Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Tennessee Wesleyan College in game one of a doubleheader in Athens, Tenn.
The shutout increased the Lady Cavaliers’ winning streak to 13 games, but the Bulldogs quickly ended the Wise team’s aspirations for extending the streak any further by taking game two, 3-2, over UVa-Wise in 10 innings.
Terri Ann Hill’s (St. Paul, Va./St. Paul High) two-run home run in the opener propelled the Lady Cavaliers to the game one win. Alicia King (Castlewood, Va./Castlewood High) also knocked in a run and had a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
In game two, Nichole Poore (Meadowview, Va./Patrick Henry High) threw seven innings, striking out 10 Bulldogs and giving up one earned run on only four hits. Poore left the game after seven innings with the game tied at 2-2. Benton pitched the final three innings. She allowed only a run on one hit, but was credited with her first loss of the year.
The Lady Cavaliers get back into action Tuesday with a doubleheader at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol. The games originally were scheduled for Feb. 28, but had to be rescheduled because of snow.
UVa-Wise returns home to Cavalier Field Wednesday for a couple of non-conference games with Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) University. The first pitch of game one is slated for 2 p.m.
