May 3, 2006
Wise, VA -- The first prized men's tennis recruit has signed with the Highland Cavaliers. Robert Bareford of Monacan High School has signed a letter of intent to play at UVa-Wise for the 2006-07 season.
An extremely young Cavs tennis team produced a 2006 season to build upon for the future under head coach Danny Rowland. The 3-12 squad will lose only one player and had four sophomores and a freshman in the seven man roster.
Bareford will come to UVa-Wise after being the top men's player for Monacan High School in Richmond, Va. In the last three seasons as of his signing date at the end of April, he had a 32-4 district and 31-9 districh and region singles records. Bareford had a 10-1 mark this year in singles action.
The outstanding player has been almost as dominating in doubles play. In 2006, Bareford has posted a perfect 11-0 district and 11-1 mark in district and region. Over the past three years, he has recorded a 24-5 record in doubles action.
He helped Monacan make it to the district tournament semi finals for singles after upsetting the fourth seed. As a sophomore, the squad went undefeated in district matches, made it to the semi finals of the regional and had a 14-1 final record. His senior year had not culminated in district and region play to this point.
