Philipp Wins but Cavs Tennis Drops Two to Mars Hill

Wise, VA – Rhyssa Philipp posted a two-set victory but The University of Virginia’s College at Wise dropped both the men’s and women’s tennis matches against NCAA Division II Mars Hill. The Lions shutout the Highland Cavalier men, 9-0, and produced a solid, 8-1, performance in the women’s side.

At five singles, Philipp defeated Kim Blythe by a 6-4, 6-3 score for the Lady Cavs (0-2) lone victory against the team’s second NCAA Division II opponent in a row. Nicole Pilkenton produced a solid outing with a three set battle but came out on the short end of the four singles (0-6, 7-6 (7-1), 4-6). Kyndall Wininger was also competitive in her match at six singles with scores of 3-6, 1-6.

Derick Wood (Wise, Va.) proved to be the toughest out for the Mars Hill men. Wood fought in two tough sets of 4-6, 5-7.

The UVa-Wise women will travel on March 4th for an 11:00 a.m. match at Lincoln Memorial. The Cavs are now off until hosting Maryville (TN) for a 3:30 p.m. affair on March 7th.
