Lady Cavs Fall in Region XII Semifinal

BRISTOL, TN - The UVa-Wise women's tennis team suffered a 5-0 setback Thursday in the semifinals of its Region XII match against Indiana University Southeast in Bristol, Tenn, ending the Cavaliers' season with an 8-5 overall record.
The Lady Cavaliers, who earned their first region tournament appearance since 2001 with a second place finish in the Appalachia Athletic Conference Tournament last week, dropped three doubles matches and a couple of singles matches against the Grenadiers, who currently are ranked 19th in the NAIA Top 25.
In singles action, No. 2 Jenni Townsend defeated the Cavaliers' Laura King (Abingdon/Abingdon High/Fr.) 6-4, 6-4, and No. 3 Britney Linde defeated Cavs No. 3 Erin Dorsey (Wise/J.J. Kelly High/Jr.) 6-1, 6-0.
The Indiana Southeast No. 1 doubles team of Tyla Wells and Townsend defeated UVa-Wise's King and Nichole Pilkenton (Norton/John I. Burton High/Fr.) 6-4, 6-0. Davina Dishner (Gate City/Gate City High/Fr.) and Jessica Bruce (Wise/J.J. Kelly High/Sr.) took a game in No. 2 doubles action, but eventually lost 1-6, 7-5, 4-6 to Sarah Mumaw and Meghan Bielski.
And in No. 3 doubles, Linde and Whitney Burich defeated Dorsey and Kate Daub (Williamsburg/Lafayette High/Fr.) 7-6, 6-3.
UVa-Wise began the season 0-4, but rallied to win eight consecutive matches to finish the regular season 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the AAC.
IUS moves on the Region XII finals Friday against Virginia Intermont College, which defeated Bethel (Tenn.) College 5-0 in the other semifinal match Thursday.
