UVA-Wise Squanders Two-Game Lead to Fall to Montreat

Wise, VA -- The UVA-Wise women's volleyball team started strong but fell apart after the second game. The Lady Cavs took the opening two games, 30-28 and 30-23, before Montreat battled back to even the night, 23-30 and 25-30. Tied 7-7, UVA-Wise was outscored in the final stretch 8-3 to lose the fifth and deciding contest 10-15 to lose 3-2.
The defeat drops UVA-Wise to 1-4 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference and 4-8 overall. Montreat takes its mark to 4-2 in the league and 6-10 on the year.
Senior Kate Daub and junior Natasha Viers paced the Lady Cavs with 19 and 17 kills. Daub added 15 digs. Viers chipped in seven blocks and 11 digs of her own. Freshman Emily Helms produced 12 kills, seven blocks, eight digs and two aces. Leeza Dos Santos handed out 52 assists and dug 15 balls. Britney Lawson rounded out the defensive effort with 11 digs.
UVA-Wise will return to action Thursday night when they host AAC member, Union College at 6:30 p.m.
