January 18, 2007
Wise, VA -- Natasha Viers recently received notice she has been selected to play women's volleyball for team USA over the summer. Viers has been invited to participate for the USA Athletes Volleyball team that will be traveling to Barbados from May 31st through June 7th, 2007 to compete in the Barbados versus USA Friendship Volleyball Tour. The tour is stated as an excellent event that fosters international goodwill and friendship, as well as promoting the game of volleyball.
With the exception of the U.S. Olympic program, there are few opportunities for athletes to experience competition, history and culture of other countries and have an opportunity to showcase their talents on an international level. USA Athletes International, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to giving athletes such an international opportunity and has established these means for athletes such as Viers since 1991.
The junior's play highlighted a 2006 injury plagued first women's volleyball season under Steve Dallman. The Lady Cavs finished 11-17 while Viers picked up where she left off from her sophomore season with an outstanding campaign.
The outside hitter earned her second All-NAIA Region XII and All-Appalachian Athletic Conference first team. She was selected NAIA Region XII and AAC Player of the Week two times for the 2006 season. The Abingdon, VA product led the Lady Cavs with 327 kills, 3.94 kills per game and hit .313 for the season. The Abingdon High player added 65 blocks, 178 digs, 24 service aces and 12 set assists. She had three matches with over 20 kills with her best game of 29 kills and one error in 41 total attack for a .683 hitting percentage with 11 digs against Union College. Viers also had a top evening of 27 kills, hit .380, 24 digs and two aces versus Tennessee Wesleyan.
The health & physical education/sport management major earned AAC All-Academic status for the second time in the last two years. Viers is the daughter of Ray and Sharlene Viers of Abingdon, Va.
