UVa-Wise Defeats Union before Falling to King in Winners Final

Bristol , Tenn. – UVa-Wise had two solid matches in the Appalachian Athletic Conference but could not pull off a third on Friday. UVa-Wise started the early afternoon by shutting out Covenant, 3-0, before outlasting Union College in five games before falling to host King College, 3-0, for the chance to advance to the league championship match.
The Lady Cavs (22-12) split the first four games against the Lady Bulldogs, 22-30, 30-21, 30-25 and 24-30. But the fifth contest has been a rallying point all season for UVa-Wise, the fourth-seed took the deciding game 15-12 for the first defeat of AAC regular season champ Union (33-13) on the year.
Britney Lawson posted 42 digs and Tasha Viers downed 28 kills in the match. Ruth Hoover added 10 kills.
The Lady Tornado (24-13) proved to be too much for the Lady Cavs in their third match of the day. King took the match with game scores of 24-30, 21-30 and 24-30.
UVa-Wise will now await the winner of the losers bracket semifinal at 11:00 a.m. The semifinal will be between Union and Bryan in a 9:00 a.m. bout. With a Lady Cavs win, the squad would move on for a rematch in the championship starting at 2:00 p.m.
Leading the way against King, Viers lined 18 kills and hit .311. Sam Puryea assisted on 35 kills and had 12 digs.
