UVa-Wise Takes Covenant Volleyball, Moves into AAC Tournament Semis

Bristol, Tenn. – The UVa-Wise women’s volleyball team continued to build upon its 2007 season of resurgence in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament first round. The Lady Cavs took the Lady Scots of Covenant College in three games (30-18, 30-24 and 30-21) at King College to advance in the winner’s bracket of the event.
UVa-Wise improved to 21-11 on the year and will advance for a 4:00 p.m. bout with the regular season champion Union College (33-12). Union (33-12) swept past Virginia Intermont, 3-0, in its first match of the day. The Lady Bulldogs won both meetings in the regular season over the Lady Cavs.
Tasha Viers pounded 19 kills, hit .472, posted six total blocks and dug seven balls to pace the UVa-Wise attack. Britney Lawson dug 33 balls and lined two aces on defense.
Sam Puryea handed out 40 assists, dug 12 balls and had a kill at setter. Maggie Berry hit 12 kills and blocked three attempts. Kristen Salyer chipped in 16 digs, seven kills and a block assist while Whittney Lane added five kills, three digs and two block assists.
Leeza Dos Santos recorded 13 digs and two aces and Cara Hamilton had 10 digs to round out the individuals in the match.
