Lawson Set Season Dig Record, Lady Cavs Sweep Match

Bluefield, Va. – Britney Lawson set a new program standard for digs in a season to help UVa-Wise sweep host Bluefield College in women’s volleyball Thursday night. Lawson dug 28 balls as the Lady Cavs prevailed by scores of 30-17, 30-25 and 30-20.
As a team, UVa-Wise posted its 18 th win of the season for the second most wins in a season in program history. The Lady Cavs are now 18-11 on the year and 12-5 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Bluefield dropped to 10-19 and 2-16 in the league.
Lawson, a junior from Rye Cove, Va., surpassed Kari Sparks’ 2003 dig total of 653 with her fourth dig on Thursday night and now has a new record of 678 after recording 28 digs.
Natasha Viers had a solid evening with 22 kills, hit .372, seven digs, an ace and four blocks. Kristen Salyer added 12 kills, six digs and an ace. Maggie Berry was the other Lady Cav with double figure kills with 10 kills, two blocks and a dig. Whittney Lane contributed seven kills and a block.
Sam Puryea handed out 48 assists to go with 15 digs, three kills and a block. Leeza Dos Santos and Cara Hamilton chipped in 12 digs apiece. Ruth Hoover rounded out the effort with three kills, three digs and a block assist.
UVa-Wise will return home to play host to AAC rival Virginia Intermont for a 4:00 p.m. match on Saturday afternoon.
