Lady Bears Gain Momentum, Outlast Lady Cavs’ Spikers

Pikeville, KY – After falling behind by two games, Pikeville College rode the momentum of a 33-31 game three win to take the next two contests over UVa-Wise 30-27 and 15-13 for the volleyball victory. The Lady Cavs grabbed the opening two games, 30-24 and 30-26, but could not win the deciding game.
UVa.-Wise (1-2) received big nights on the court from senior frontline players Whittney Lane (Norton, Va./J.I. Burton) and Tasha Viers (Abingdon, Va/Abingdon). Lane lined 18 kills and blocked two attempts. Viers downed 16 kills, lined two aces and blocked four attempts. Ruth Hoover (New Castle, Va/Craig Co.) added 13 kills.
Britney Lawson (Rye Cove, Va.) posted a career-best 30 digs against the Lady Bears. Kristen Salyer (Gate City, Va.) dug 20 balls and downed 11 kills. Sam Puryea (Bristol, Tenn./ Tennessee) handed out 61 assists, lined two aces and blocked four attempts. Maggie Berry (Rye Cove, Va.) blocked six attempts and Leeze Dos Santos (Va. Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) had 10 digs.
The Lady Cavs will return to action on Friday and Saturday at the Emory & Henry Tournament.
