Lady Cavs Cage Lady Lions in Big Volleyball Victory

Wise, Va. – On a brisk Friday night outside, the UVa-Wise women’s volleyball team caged the Bryan College in five games. The Lady Cavs split the first four games – 30-28, 25-30, 30-23 and 18-30 before edging out the Lady Lions 16-14 in the deciding fifth contest for the big Appalachian Athletic Conference bout.
UVa-Wise improved to 15-9 on the season and 9-3 in the league to move back into a tie with King College in third. Bryan College falls out of a tie for first at 12-2 and 16-6 for the year.
Senior Cara Hamilton (Gate City, Va.) paced the home defense with 17 digs to become the third Lady Cav player to reach 1,000 career digs (1,013) while having three aces. Kristen Salyer (Hiltons, Va.) pounded 19 kills, dug 18 balls and served four aces. Natasha Viers (Abingdon, Va.) hit 15 kills of her own while adding five digs, four block assists and two aces.
Setter Sam Puryea (Bristol, Tenn.) gave out 48 assists and dug 13 balls. Ruth Hoover (New Castle, Va.) produced a career-best 27 digs on the night while Leeza Dos Santos (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 15 digs and two aces.
UVa-Wise will complete its four home match week in a 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning match against Covenant College.
