UVa-Wise Spikers Tame Scots to Finish Tough Week

Wise, Va. – The UVa-Wise women’s spikers tamed Covenant College Saturday morning to finish a tough four match in five days. The Lady Cavs narrowly missed sweeping the Scots in three games but won the match in four contests, 30-27, 33-35, 30-27 and 30-14.

With three wins in the four matches, UVa-Wise improved to 10-3 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference and 16-9 overall. Covenant fell to 8-12 and 6-7 in the league.

Natasha Viers pounded 19 kills to go with eight digs, six blocks and an ace. Kristen Salyer had what has become her usual good all-around game of 15 kills, 17 digs and six aces. Ruth Hoover produced five aces, five kills and 12 digs.

Sam Puryea handed out 46 assists, dug 15 balls, lined two aces and slid in three kills. Cara Hamilton had a team-best and career-high 23 digs. Whittney Lane, who had five blocks, and Maggie Berry added eight and seven kills.

The team has earned some well deserved days off until traveling to play at Milligan College next Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.
