Emory, VA – UVa-Wise volleyball breezed past Randolph College early Saturday afternoon before falling, 3-0, to Southern Virginia in the Emory & Henry Tournament Championship. The Lady Cavs went past Randolph, 30-17, 30-24 and 30-11 before dropping th title bout to the Lady Knights, 21-30, 19-30 and 22-30.
UVa-Wise (3-4) saw both senior middle hitter Natasha Viers and junior outside hitter Kristen Salyer were both selected to the all-tournament team.
Against Randolph, Viers and Salyer hit a combined 24 kills with a .364 hitting percentage. Viers had 13 kills and two assists while Salyer had 11 kills, two aces, eight digs and a block assist. Freshman Sam Puryea handed out 32 assists and dug 11 balls with four aces and four blocks. Britney Lawson and Leeza Dos Santos chipped in 15 and 11 digs.
In the championship, Viers was the lone double digit kill player for the Lady Cavs against Southern Virginia. She also had four digs and two blocks. Salyer contributed nine kills, three blocks, two digs and an ace. Lawson and Cara Hamilton both accounted for 13 digs. Puryea posted 20 assists.
UVa-Wise will open its home slate next Tuesday evening, September 4th, for a 6:30 p.m. Appalachian Athletic Conference match with Milligan College.
