Grayson County Six-Foot Duo Sign with Lady Cavs Volleyball

September 24, 2007

Wise, Va. – The University of Virginia’s College at Wise head volleyball coach Steve Dallman secured Grayson County High School’s two high-touted six-foot middle hitters, Mikaela Anders and Megan Funk, last Friday afternoon to patrol the team’s frontline of the future.

In his second year, Dallman is building a solid and talented UVa-Wise women’s volleyball roster. The current club will enter this week 10-8 overall, already just one win shy of matching last year’s total, and 4-2 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference heading into Tuesday night’s home league match against Bluefield College starting at 6:30 p.m.

The duo of Anders and Funk will help fill the future departed senior starters of two-time NAIA All-Region Natasha Viers and right side Whittney Lane.

The two Grayson County middle hitters have helped the Blue Devils to three-straight Mountain Empire District regular season and tournament championships. Grayson County has reached the regional semi-finals two times while finishing regional runner-up and state quarterfinalist last year.

Mikaela Anders was selected as the Mountain Empire District Player of the Year and honored to the All-State second team as a junior. The middle hitter earned All-MED and All-Region C first team acclaim for the second year in a row as well as all-state honorable mention her sophomore campaign. She was also all-district second team three years ago.

Anders has received awards in both basketball and track and field in her scholastic career. In basketball, she has been a two-time all-district first team pick. The senior gained all-region in the discus and all-district for the shot put as a thrower in track and field.

Mikaela is the daughter of Mike and Sandra Anders of Galex, Va. and plans to major in medical technology/clinical lab sciences at UVa-Wise.

Megan Funk will follow her brother, Brock, a senior Cavs’ baseball pitcher/first baseman, to the UVa-Wise campus. The past two seasons, Funk has been awarded All-Region C second team and All-MED first team honors.

The middle hitter has also earned acclaim on the softball diamond. She has helped the Blue Devils to two district titles while being picked all-region second team last year and all-district first team each of the past two softball seasons.

Megan is the daughter of Tiny and Roxanna Funk of Fries, Va. and will enter her collegiate career as an undecided major.
