Lady Cavs Volleyball Pair reach 1,000 Marks

Wise, Va. – The University of Virginia’s College at Wise women’s volleyball pair of Cara Hamilton and Sam Puryea reached career and season 1,000 marks over the past games. Hamilton posted her 1,000 th career dig while Puryea handed out her 1,000 season set assist.

The pair have helped the UVa-Wise spikers to a 17-9 record, six more wins than last year, and an 11-3 Appalachian Athletic Conference mark for third in the current standings.

Hamilton, a Gate City, Va. native, joined former player Kari Sparks (1,755 digs) and teammate Britney Lawson (1,160 digs) as Lady Cavs with at least 1,000 career digs. The senior has a total of 1,045 digs in 362 career matches. The defensive specialist dug 17 balls on Oct. 12 th in a 3-2 win over Bryan College to reach the milestone. She followed the performance with a career-best 23 digs in a victory over Covenant College, 3-1, the next morning, October 13 th. The defender has a total of 243 digs and 32 service aces to highlight her 2007 individual numbers.

In her first year, Puryea has provided solid play as the UVa-Wise setter. The Tennessee High product is the first Lady Cavs setter with 1,000 set assists in a season since the current program records were started beginning in the 2001 season. The 5-9 freshman gave out 46 assists in the October 13 th bout with Covenant to give her 1,0001 for the year at that point. She has 1,052 assists, 10.73 assists per game, in 98 games while leading the team with 47 service aces. Puryea’s best game came came against King College with 63 assists back on September 6 th.

The Lady Cavs return to action on Tuesday night, October 23 rd at King College for a 6:30 p.m. match.
