Lawson and Puryea Named AAC Volleyball Players of the Week

Wise, Va. – UVa-Wise Libero Britney Lawson and setter Sam Puryea were both named Appalachian Athletic Conference women’s volleyball Player of the Week today. The two Lady Cavs aided the team to two sweep of conference foes Bluefield and Montreat.
UVa-Wise claimed its 12th win of the year with the victory over Montreat last Thursday night to surpass last season’s total under second-year head coach Steve Dallman. The Lady Cavs are 12-8 overall and third in the AAC standings at 6-2.
Lawson (Rye Cove, Va.) was honored for the second time this season as the league’s Libero of the Week. Britney produced her fifth and sixth 30 dig matches after posting 34 in each of the 3-0 wins. She averaged 11.33 digs per game on the week while adding an ace against Bluefield. Lawson has 482 digs (6.34 per game) and is on pace to break Kari Sparks 2003 record of 653 digs in a season.
First-year Tennessee High product Puryea received the AAC Setter of the Week for her first time. Sam averaged 14.67 assists, 3.5 digs and 1.2 kills per game. Puryea handed out 47 assists, dug seven balls, downed three kills and lined an ace. She followed with 41 assists, 14 digs, four kills and two aces. The Bristol, Tenn. native has 767 set assists, 187 digs and 35 aces on the year.
The Lady Cavs are off until traveling to Virginia Intermont for a 6:30 p.m. match on Thursday night.
