Lady Cavs Split Pair of Matches to Start Season

Beckley, WV – The 2007 volleyball season started off with a hard fought victory for the UVa-Wise team. The Lady Cavs battled back from two games to edge Carlow College, 3-2, before falling to host Mountain State, 3-1, in back-to-back matches on Saturday afternoon.
In the first match, Carlow claimed the opening two games, 27-30 and 23-30. UVa-Wise (1-1) battled back with 30-25 and 30-27 wins before clinching the win with a 15-12 fifth contest. Mountain State breezed to a 30-10 first game win before UVa-Wise won 30-22 but dropped the next two contests, 23-30 and 19-30.
Tasha Viers and Kristen Salyer had outstanding efforts against Carlow. Viers downed 20 kills and blocked three shots. Salyer posted 14 kills, dug 19 balls, lined three aces and had two blocks. Whittney Lane added 13 kills while Cara Hamilton handed out 40 assists and had two aces. Britney Lawson dug 18 balls and Leeza Dos Santos 17. Sam Puryea had 20 assists and Ruth Hoover two aces.
Against Mountain State, Lane paced the frontline with 15 kills and three blocks. Salyer downed 12 kills and 15 digs. Puryea set 35 kills and had two aces. Lawson added 20 digs and Hoover 14.
The Lady Cavs return to action in a 6:30 p.m. match at Pikeville College on Monday night.
