Lady Cavs Outlast Lady Bears, Record 20th Win

Wise, Va. – On ‘Senior Night,’ the UVa-Wise quartet of seniors helped outlast Pikeville College on the women’s volleyball court Monday night. The Lady Cavs took the five-game match with scores of 30-23, 32-34, 30-24, 14-30 and 15-5 to record the 20 th win on the year for just the second time in program history.
UVa-Wise improves to 20-11 on the year in the last match before this weekend’s Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament at King College on Friday and Saturday. Pikeville drops to 19-18.
Natasha Viers made her last home match count by downing 28 kills, hitting .311, blocking five attempts, digging five balls and lining two aces. Fellow senior Whittney Lane accounted for eight kills and three digs. Cara Hamilton produced 16 digs and Leeza Dos Santos added 21 digs to round out the senior Lady Cavs.
Junior Britney Lawson eclipsed a new career-high for digs with 47 in the five game bout. Freshman Maggie Berry had her best outing of the year with 18 kills, hit .292 and blocked five attempts.
Sam Puryea handed out 64 assists to go with 12 digs, three block assists, an ace and one kill. Kristen Salyer had another double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs along with two block assists and two aces. Ruth Hoover chipped in seven digs and five kills.
In the AAC tournament Friday afternoon, fourth-seeded UVa-Wise will face fifth-seed Covenant at 1:00 p.m.
