Puryea and Lawson Gather Weekly Honors

Wise, Va. – Sam Puryea and Britney Lawson gathered women’s volleyball weekly awards to start this week for UVa-Wise. Puryea was honored as the NAIA Region XII and Appalachian Athletic Conference Setter of the Week while Lawson was the AAC Libero of the Week.
The duo have helped the Lady Cavs notch fourth place in the AAC regular season at 13-5 after being selected seventh in the preseason poll. Overall, UVa-Wise is 20-11 on the year, the second 20-win season in program history.
Puryea from Bristol, Tenn. handed out 92 assists, dug 25 balls, downed five kills, lined two aces and had two blocks in 3-0 sweeps of AAC foes Bluefield and Virginia Intermont. She had two similar matches with 48 assists and 15 digs versus Bluefield and 44 assists and 10 digs with two aces against Virginia Intermont.
Lawson of Rye Cove, Va. accounted for 50 digs to pace the Lady Cavs’ defense. The junior had 28 digs against Bluefield and another 22 digs versus Virginia Intermont.
UVa-Wise will next begin play in the AAC Tournament on Friday afternoon when it faces Covenant College at 1:00 p.m. at King College.
