Puryea and Viers Claim NAIA Region XII and AAC Weekly Volleyball Awards

Wise, Va. – Following a solid week of three wins in four matches, UVa-Wise setter Sam Puryea and middle hitter Natasha Viers earned NAIA Region XII and Appalachian Athletic Conference Setter and Player of the Week awards.
The Lady Cavs had a good week despite a tough schedule of four matches in five days. The team improved to 16-9 and 10-3 in the AAC, third place after the week. UVa-Wise opened the week with its lone defeat to top league team Union, 3-0, before prevailing over Tennessee Wesleyan, 3-1, Bryan, 3-2, and Covenant, 3-1.
Puryea, a freshman from Bristol, Tenn., became the second setter in school history to get 1,000 assists in a season. She surpassed the mark in the last match Saturday morning against Covenant and now has 1,001 with a 10.65 assists per game average. For the week, the 5-9 setter averaged 11.25 assists per game, 56 digs, six aces and 10 kills. Her best game of the week came against Tennessee Wesleyan where she had 51 assists, 15 digs, six kills and two aces.
Viers picked up her second region and conference weekly awards. The senior from Abingdon, Va. pounded 66 kills in 16 games and hit .255 for the week. The middle hitter recorded two big games with 18 kills, 11 digs, three aces and two blocks against Tennessee Wesleyan and added 19 kills, eight digs, six blocks and an ace versus Covenant. Viers leads the Lady Cavs with 414 kills, 4.36 kills per game and 153 blocks.
UVa-Wise will be off until traveling to Milligan College Thursday night for the next AAC match starting at 6:30 p.m.
