Lady Cavs Win in Four on ‘Dig for a Cure Night’

Wise, Va. – In the lone NAIA/AVCA ‘Dig for a Cure Night,’ the UVa-Wise Lady Cavs dug 91 balls on the way to a 3-1 women’s volleyball victory over Tennessee Wesleyan. The Lady Cavs took the first two contests, 30-25 and 30-24 before falling in the third game, 23-30, and wrapped up the match with a 30-24 fourth game score.
UVa-Wise moved back to the win column to move to 14-9 on the year and 8-3 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Tennessee Wesleyan fell to 3-16 and 1-13 in the league. The Susan B. Komen For the Cure Foundation was the key ingredient of the night and the amount of funds raised for the cause will be released in the next few days.
Freshman setter Sam Puryea (Bristol, Tenn.) had an outstanding all-around game. Puryea handed out 51 assists to go with 15 digs, six kills, two aces and two blocks. Natasha Viers (Abingdon, Va.) had a double-double with 18 kills and 11 digs including two blocks. Kristen Salyer (Hiltons, Va.) added 11 kills, seven digs and six aces. Front line players Whittney Lane ( Norton, Va.) and Maggie Berry (Clinchport, Va.) chipped in 11 and 10 kills.
Britney Lawson (Rye Cove, Va) produced 20 digs while Leeza Dos Santos (Va. Beach, Va.) had 19 digs and two aces. Cara Hamilton (Gate City, Va.) rounded out the individuals with 11 digs.
The Lady Cavs continue their four-game homestand of the week by facing AAC co-leader Bryan College Friday night starting at 6:30 p.m.
