Emory, Va. – The first taste of collegiate volleyball for half of the 2008 Lady Cavs squad finally arrived on Friday night in the Emory & Henry Tournament. The end result was a split of a pair of matches as UVa-Wise fell to highly-touted Bridgewater, 0-3, (19-25, 17-25, 17-25) before bouncing back against Meredith College 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-21).
UVa-Wise (1-1) will move onto the second day of the two day tournament with a 1:45 p.m. affair against Southern Virginia before facing host Emory & Henry starting at 4:00 p.m.
Against Bridgewater, UVa-Wise could not get going against in the first bout. Megan Funk (Fries, Va.) was one of three players to record four kills but added seven digs and two blocks. Kelley Bumgarner (Johnson City, Tenn.) had 15 assists.
In the late game, the Lady Cavs dropped the first game before sweeping through the next three for the win. Kristen Salyer (Gate City, Va.) and Mikaela Anders (Galax, Va.) pounded 11 kills apiece. Salyer added nine digs, five blocks and an ace while Anders chipped in six blocks. Eleanor Lafoon (Richmond, Va.) downed eight kills and three blocks. Sam Brummette (Wise, Va.) had a solid outing at setter with 22 assists, seven digs, three blocks and a pair of aces.
Ruth Hoover (New Castle, Va.) totaled 20 digs and three aces in the two matches.
