BREVARD 3, UVA-WISE 2
D'oh, Lady Cavs Win Streak Ends at 15
October 26, 2004
WISE, VA - UVa-Wise had its 15-match winning streak snapped Tuesday in a 3-2 (30-28, 25-30, 21-30, 30-24, 12-15) loss on the road against Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Brevard (N.C.) College.
The Lady Cavaliers fell to 17-3 overall and 16-3 in the conference, creating a traffic jam for the race to the AAC crown. UVa-Wise, Brevard, King College and Montreat College each have three conference losses.
The Lady Cavaliers can partly control their fate the rest of the way through the turbulent ACC schedule, but also will need to do some cheering for other teams.
UVa-Wise next plays on the road at Montreat Thursday night. Montreat and Brevard hook up next Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Brevard. A win for the Cavaliers over Montreat Thursday coupled with a Montreat victory over Brevard next week could put UVa-Wise back in the driver's seat for the conference regular season championship.
Brevard, the last team to defeat UVa-Wise before the Cavaliers began their 15-match winning streak, holds the tie-breaker advantage over UVa-Wise, having swept the season series between the two squads.
At stake in this four-team pile-up is not just the AAC crown, but also the luxury of playing at home during the post-season tournament.
By conference rules, the AAC's regular season champ has the option of hosting the tournament. The Cavaliers have never won the AAC title.
In Tuesday's loss to the Tornados, freshman Evelyn Woods made 18 kills and six blocks for the Lady Cavaliers. Senior Sara Stanley and freshman Natasha Viers each had 14 kills.
Kari Sparks made 40 digs for the Lady Cavaliers, and Kendall Rainey dished up 68 assists.
