Ways to Give
There are many ways to make a gift or to fulfill a pledge to the Fulfilling the Dream campaign. Gifts may be tailored to your own interests and your individual tax situation. Some ways of giving have added benefits to you depending on your age, the type of asset contributed, and the form of the gift you select. UVa-Wise will work with you to fashion the most beneficial gift for you, for your family, and for UVa-Wise.
RESTRICTED AND UNRESTRICTED
Gifts of any size may be designated for a specific campaign goal of particular interest to the donor (restricted) or left unrestricted. Unrestricted gifts are particularly valuable since they give UVa-Wise the flexibility to allocate the funds where they are most needed.
Pledges to the campaign can be paid over three to five years. A Letter of Intent, available from the UVa-Wise Development Office, or a pledge form may be used to confirm a pledge in writing.
Gifts such as works of art, jewelry, personal collections, or real estate may be given to UVa-Wise and provide you with a tax deduction.
GIFTS OF CASH
By far the easiest and most common way to support UVa-Wise is to make an outright gift of cash. In general, you are entitled to an income tax deduction for the full amount of the gift.
GIFTS OF APPRECIATED SECURITIES
If you own appreciated securities held more than 12 months, you can benefit in two ways by making a gift of securities to UVa-Wise. First, you will be able to claim a charitable income tax deduction for the full value of the gift. Second, you will avoid the capital gains tax on the amount of appreciation that would have been due if you had sold the shares yourself. To make a gift of securities to UVa-Wise, please contact the Development Office at 276-328-0129 or e-mail Tami Ely, Vice Chancellor for Development & College Relations, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Bequests, large and small, are a significant source of support for UVa-Wise. A legal disposition by will, which names UVa-Wise as the recipient of all or a portion of the donor’s estate, not only helps the College but usually reduces the donor’s federal estate taxes and, in most cases, the donor's state inheritance tax, as well. Various types of planned gifts include the charitable gift annuity, the deferred gift annuity, the charitable remainder trust, and the charitable lead trust.
Many employers match the gift their employees make to UVa-Wise. Please check with your employer to see if the company has a charitable contribution matching gifts program.
