Transatlantic studies to be focus of UVa-Wise lecture on March 31

Associate Professor Eyda Merediz of the University of Maryland will present “Transatlantic Studies and the Hemispheric Turn” as part of the spring lecture series at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

The March 31 lecture will begin at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Her presentation will center on the origins and ramifications of transatlantic studies, an emerging field of research and teaching that is increasingly prevalent in the study of humanities. The practice of the field has contributed to the immergence of the Iberian Atlantic and also has taken a hemispheric turn.

Merediz is associate professor of Spanish and Latin American literature at the University of Maryland, where she arrived in 1998 after completing her doctoral work at Princeton University. In her book, “Refracted Images: The Canary Islands through a New World Lens,” Merediz explored the literary and cultural exchanges that prevailed in the Hispanic world of the 16th and 17th centuries.

She has also taught and researched on more contemporary Caribbean studies, in specific Cuban cinema and literature and its transnational dimension that shows in her forthcoming “Otros estudios transatlánticos: lecturas desde lo latinoamericano,” co-edited with Nina Gerassi-Navarro.
