Appalachian Writing Project to host ‘Intensive Journal’ workshop April 18-19

An upcoming “Intensive Journal” workshop will introduce area professionals and community members to a method for professional development through writing. To be held April 18-19, the seminar is sponsored by the Appalachian Writing Project, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise and Wise County Schools.

The seminar will be held at the Cove Ridge Center at Natural Tunnel State Park in Scott County. Vic Kryston, adjunct professor at Northern Virginia Community College, will lead the two-day workshop, which will begin Friday, April 18, at 2 p.m.

The “Intensive Journal” method was developed in 1966 by Dr. Ira Progoff. The nationally recognized program aids writers in realizing the continuity and direction of their lives, building a solid basis for future decisions and connecting more deeply with personal relationships, careers and interests.

The method has been said to be beneficial for counselors, social workers, chaplains, teachers, administrators and ministers.

The workshop is open to the public for a fee of $150. The registration fee is waived for Appalachian Writing Project teacher consultants and Wise County teachers, who can pay $25 for lunch and dinner. Teachers from other counties should check with administrators for available funding.

Teachers may receive 12 recertification points for participation in the workshop.

To download an application and brochure, visit the Appalachian Writing Project Web site at people.uvawise.edu/awp.

The deadline for applications is April 11.

Applications and payment may be sent to Jennifer Partin at the Center for Teaching Excellence, UVa-Wise, One College Avenue, Wise, VA 24293. Applications also may be faxed to 276-376-4528.

For more information, contact Amy Clark at 276-376-4562 or aclark@virginia.edu, or Grace Bradshaw at gbradshawmab@yahoo.com.
