UVa-Wise celebrates Women’s History Month
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will celebrate Women’s History Month with a series of lectures and panel discussions featuring faculty, staff, students and community members.
Cindy Wilkey, assistant professor of history, will present her research on Catherine Wright, sister of Orville and Wilbur Wright. The presentation will take place March 19 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths.
On March 24, Rachel Tighe, associate professor of communication and chair of the Department of Communication Studies, will present a lecture on “Gender Differences in Communication.” The presentation will take place at 1 p.m. in the Chapel.
A panel discussion on “Balancing Acts” will take place at 1 p.m. on March 26 in the Student Center’s Dogwood Room. Taking part in the panel discussion will be Marla Weitzman, associate professor of English; Jewell Askins, assistant professor of education and director of the Teacher Education Program; Kristina Feeser, associate professor of psychology; and Margie Tucker, professor of chemistry.
A panel of “career women” will discuss the education, duties and responsibilities required for certain careers during a 7 p.m. lecture on March 27 in the Chapel.
The celebration will wrap up on Friday, March 28, with a presentation by Weitzman and Elizabeth Steele, coordinator of advising and retention, about the “Women of ‘The Maltese Falcon.’ ” The 1 p.m. lecture will be held in the Chapel.
This presentation is given in conjunction with The Big Read, a National Endowment for the Arts program awarded to The Lonesome Pine Library. A number of events centered on “The Maltese Falcon” by Dashiell Hammett will take place throughout the area. The College is partnering with the Library to promote the joy of reading.
All events are free and open to the public. UVa-Wise students attending events will receive cultural credit.
