UVa-Wise
workshop to focus on the recruitment and retention of health
care
professionals
The Graduate Medical Education Consortium at The University
of Virginiaπs
College at Wise will host a half-day workshop on June 11
to examine the
" Recruitment and Retention of Health Care Professionals."
The workshop begins at noon on Friday, June 11 on the fifth
floor of the C.
Bascom Slemp Student Center at UVa-Wise and continues until
5 p.m. The event
is free and includes a buffet lunch.
The Recruitment and Retention workshop is designed for local
leaders,
doctors, dentists, counselors, nurses, managers, executives
and others
involved in professional recruitment. Participants will
learn how to go
about finding, attracting, and keeping health care providers
in small rural
communities.
Workshop topics include: Public and Private Sources of Help;
How to Reach
the Right Candidates; Meeting Family Needs (employment,
education,
recreation); Promotional Materials; Dos and Donπt for
Screening; Site
Visits and Interviews; Competitive Compensation; Employment
or Income
Guarantee; Autonomy and Control Issues; and Community Integration.
Presenters at the workshop include: Karen Reed, Virginia
Office of Health
Policy and Planning; Karin Guye, Virginia Primary Care Association;
Roger
Hofford, M.D., Carilion Family Practice Residency Program;
and Lilia Mayer,
Healthy Communities Loan Fund.
The Recruitment and Retention workshop was made possible
by a $3,000 grant
from the Virginia Health Policy Center. Recruitment and
Retention is the
third in a series of conferences held at UVa-Wise to analyze
and address
health care issues in Southwest Virginia. Previous conferences
were the
Southwest Virginia Health Conference in November 2000 and
Access Issues:
Primary Care and Mental Health in May 2003.
