Pulitzer-prize
winning journalist Laurie Garrett to visit UVa-Wise April
11
Laurie
Garrett, one of America’s premier authorities on healthcare
and disease prevention, will discuss “Bioterrorism:
The Modern Peril” during a lecture at The University
of Virginia’s College at Wise on Monday, April 11.
Garrett’s presentation, which is free and open to
the public, begins at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths.
A book signing will follow.
Currently the Gates Senior Fellow in Global Health at the
Council on Foreign Relations, Garrett is the author of the
best-selling books, The Coming Plague and Betrayal of Trust.
She is the only person ever to have been awarded all three
of the top prizes in journalism: the Peabody, the Polk,
and the Pulitzer.
Garrett has investigated both the science and the politics
behind international bioterrorism; her presentation provides
a responsible and informative assessment of this frightening
possibility. She is frequently asked to discuss her research
on national television programs including ABC Nightline,
The Jim Lehrer NewsHour, The Charlie Rose Show, The Oprah
Winfrey Show, and Dateline.
Copies of Garrett’s books are available in the UVa-Wise
Campus Bookstore. For more information, contact the Office
of College Relations at 276-328-0130.
