"Steel Magnolias," the second UVa-Wise production staged by Director Jon Menick, is guaranteed to tickle the funny bone and tenderize the heart.
"Steel Magnolias" will premiere in the UVa-Wise Theatre April 11-13 at 8 p.m. each evening and April 14 at 2:30 p.m. The hold over week runs April 18-20 at 8 p.m. each evening and April 21 at 2:30 p.m.
"Steel Magnolias" is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (Jillian Kennedy), the outspoken, wisecracking, Truvy (Nancy Wampler), dispenses shampoo and free advice to the town's rich, curmudgeon, Ouiser (Tanya Bartek), an eccentric millionaire. Also filling the beauty shop are Miss Clairee (Sharon Pigeon), who has a raging sweet tooth, and the local social leader, M'Lynn (Pamela Gilmer), whose daughter, Shelby (Emerald Robinson), the prettiest girl in town, is about to marry a "good old boy."
Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic verbal collisions, the play draws on underlying strength and love. Its characters are truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and in bad.
Geneses Hair Salon in Wise, co-owned by Ted and Karen Barnette, serves as the local inspiration for the stage design. The set for "Steel Magnolias" will be styled to look like the Geneses Hair Salon and Karen Barnette will choreograph all the play's hair styling scenes, giving an extra dimension of reality to the production.
