"Holiday Festival with the Arts" at UVa-Wise Dec. 3-14

The public is invited to celebrate the holiday season along with The University of Virginia's College at Wise during the “Holiday Festival with the Arts” Dec. 3-14.

Sponsored by the UVa-Wise Department of Visual and Performing Arts, the “Holiday Festival with the Arts” began as a way to showcase the talents of UVa-Wise faculty, staff and students and has proven so successful new events have been added each year. This year's festival features a variety of musical performances and a student art exhibit, which will be on display in Darden Hall from Dec. 6 through Dec. 13.


Those interested in learning how to make their own works of art are invited to attend a workshop on "Traditional Ukrainian Egg Design" on Tuesday, Dec. 7. The event will be held from 7-9 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths.


All “Holiday Festival with the Arts” events are free and open to the public. A complete schedule of events follows:

Friday, Dec. 3
UVa-Wise Concert Band and Jazz Band Performance
8 p.m., UVa-Wise Theatre

The UVa-Wise Concert Band and Jazz Band will present their annual concert. In addition to sounds of the season, the Concert Band will perform works by Ralph Vaughn Williams, Gustav Holst and Eric Whitacre. The Jazz Band will perform traditional jazz literature and will feature vocalist Michelle Lewis from Clintwood on the beautiful ballad, "When I Fall in Love.” The 60-member UVa-Wise Band, under the direction of Richard Galyean, is made up of UVa-Wise students and community members.

Monday, Dec. 6 through Monday, Dec. 13
Student Art Exhibit, Darden Hall

The creative works of UVa-Wise art students will be on display on the lower level of Darden Hall. The exhibit is open during regular business hours. The public is invited to attend a reception for the student artists at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9.

Sunday, Dec. 5
UVa-Wise Dance Ensemble
8 p.m., UVa-Wise Theatre

The dance performance “UVa-Wise – Fifty Years of Music” will include songs from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s’, ‘90s’ and today. The dance troupe is under the direction of Gina Lester.

Monday, Dec. 6
UVa-Wise Concert Choir Performance
7 p.m., Chapel of All Faiths

The Concert Choir will perform a variety of holiday favorites. The Concert Choir, an organization open to all UVa-Wise students without audition, is under the direction of Michael D. Cox, instructor of music.

Tuesday, Dec. 7
Art Slide Presentation
4-6 p.m., Science Center Room 104A

Painter David Constable will present a sampling of his work.

Tuesday, Dec. 7
Traditional Ukrainian Egg Design Workshop
7-9 p.m., Chapel of All Faiths

Participants will learn the basics of Ukrainian egg design from student Inia Yevich and Suzanne Adams-Ramsey, chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

Wednesday, Dec. 8
Chamber Music Concert
1 p.m., Chapel of All Faiths

An event featuring performances by the Wind Ensemble, Wise/Guys Brass Ensemble, and Recorder Ensemble. The groups are under the direction of Richard Galyean and Ross Grable.

UVa-Wise Chamber Choir Performance
8 p.m. Chapel of All Faiths

The Chamber Choir will present choral works by Mozart, Victoria, Rutter, Hayes, Hogan, and others. Under the director of D. Michael Donathan, professor emeritus of music, the Chamber Choir is an auditioned choral organization open to UVa-Wise students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the community
