Teachers invited to attend professional development series at UVa-Wise
Teachers in Southwest Virginia are invited to attend the Appalachian Writing Project’s “Writing Across the Curriculum” professional development series beginning Jan. 16 at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
Educators from all disciplines and grade levels, kindergarten through college, are welcome to attend the Wednesday evening workshops, which will begin at 6:15 p.m.
The series will include 14 workshops developed and presented by Appalachian Writing Project teacher consultants. Topics will span many subjects, including multi-genre research, digital storytelling, writing and math, and teaching writing to students with disabilities.
Each workshop is worth 1.5 recertification points. Pre-registration and a fee of $20 are required. Educators should check with their individual school system to determine if funding is available.
The Appalachian Writing Project, part of the Center for Teaching Excellence at The University of Virginia's College at Wise, is a local site of the National Writing Project (NWP). Since its inception in 1974, the NWP has spread to 185 regional learning communities, which are comprised of school-university partnerships. The National Commission on Writing has high praise for the National Writing Project because its model of teacher education is collaborative and its track record remains superb. NWP believes that quality teaching comes from sharing best practices and exploring together the problems of assessment.
