UVa-Wise
choral organizations to present concerts
May 6, 8, 10
The
University of Virginia’s College at Wise Concert Choir
and Chamber Choir will present three concerts in May, including
a special Mother’s Day performance. All performances
are free and open to the public.
The UVa-Wise Concert Choir will present
its Annual Spring Concert on Friday, May 6 at 1 p.m. in
the Chapel of All Faiths.
On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8, the
Concert Choir will offer a musical tribute to mothers. The
performance begins at 3 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist
Church in Wise. A light reception will follow.
The UVa-Wise Concert Choir is a student
organization specializing in different musical styles and
genres. The group, comprised of 30 students, will sing “Down
to the River to Pray” from the film “Oh Brother
Where Art Thou?,” a medley of songs from the Broadway
musical “Phantom of the Opera” and several other
compositions.
The UVa-Wise Concert Choir is under the
direction of Michael Cox, instructor in music. Deata Trent
McConnell is the accompanist for the group.
On Tuesday, May 10, the UVa-Wise Chamber
Choir under the direction of D. Michael Donathan, emeritus
professor of music, will present a concert of sacred and
secular compositions. The performance begins at 8 p.m. in
the Chapel of All Faiths.
The UVa-Wise Chamber Choir, which includes
30 members, is the oldest choral organization at UVa-Wise.
Members include UVa-Wise faculty, staff, students and members
of the community. Kathy Thacker Stewart is the accompanist
for the group.
The Chamber Choir will present sacred works
by Bach, Handel, Vaughan Williams, Agay, and Rutter. In
addition, the Women’s Ensemble, and Chamber Choir
soloists will sing arrangements from various Broadway musicals.
