to mark Constitution Day with Sept. 16 lecture

The
University of Virginia’s College at Wise will mark
Constitution Day with a free public lecture on Friday, Sept.
16. The event begins at 1 p.m. in Smiddy Hall.
Garrett Sheldon, the John Morton Beaty Professor of Political
Science at UVa-Wise, will discuss the "Foundations
of the Constitution: Jefferson and Madison."
A member of the UVa-Wise faculty since 1983, Sheldon is
the author of several books on political theory and early
American political thought including The Political Philosophy
of Thomas Jefferson and The Political Philosophy of James
Madison. He is the 1992 recipient of the Outstanding Faculty
Award presented by the State Council of Higher Education
for Virginia, the Commonwealth's highest honor for faculty
at Virginia's public and private colleges and universities.
Sheldon has served as a guest lecturer at Oxford University,
Moscow University, Princeton University, and the University
of Vienna, Austria.
Under the terms of federal legislation passed in 2004, all
federally funded colleges and universities must plan events
to commemorate the signing of the Constitution on Sept.
17, 1787.
The public is invited to attend Constitution Day activities.
