Area high school students conduct science, math
research during Governor's School at UVa-Wise

Governor's School 2005

The University of Virginia's College at Wise welcomed 28 regional high school students to attend the 21st annual Governor's School from June 26 to July 16.

The three-week program provided these highly motivated students interested in mathematics and science with an opportunity to pursue a vigorous interdisciplinary course of study in the College's residential setting, an experience not available in the normal high school classroom setting.

The program's participants were members of student teams directed by UVa-Wise faculty to conduct original field research in hydrology, biometry, soil chemistry, surveying and
technology. Each team's specialty contributed to the overall conclusions of the research in each environmental site in a paper edited by a member of the English faculty at UVa-Wise.

In addition to their research, students also lived in campus apartments during their three-week stay, which allowed the students to sample residential college life beyond their academic studies.

High school students in grades 10 or 11 from Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Dickenson, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Lee, Patrick, Pulaski, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise and Wythe counties or from the cities of Bristol, Galax, Norton and Radford are eligible to attend the Governor's School program. Students may apply by
contacting their guidance counselors in their home high schools. For more information, contact Sarah Cromer, Director of the Governor's School, at 276-964-9437

The only branch campus of the University of Virginia, UVa-Wise is ranked among the nation's top ten public liberal arts colleges by U.S. News and World Report. UVa-Wise is home to 1,800 students and offers under graduate and professional programs in the liberal arts tradition of Thomas Jefferson. Admissions information is available at www.uvawise.edu.
