UVa-Wise
Highland Players to stage Metamorphoses
beginning Nov. 11
The
Highland Players will present the Tony Award-winning Broadway
sensation Metamorphoses at 8 p.m. on Friday and
Saturday, Nov. 11-12 and Nov. 18-19, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday,
Nov. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 19 in The University of Virginia's
College at Wise Theatre Building.
Metamorphoses
brings the epic poems of Ovid to stunning visual life.
Set in and around a large pool of water, Metamorphoses
juxtaposes the ancient and the contemporary in both
language and image to reflect the variety and persistence
of narrative in the face of inevitable change.
Written
and originally directed by Mary Zimmerman, Metamorphoses
has delighted Broadway audiences since 2002.
The production offers a moving, thought-provoking, and often
humorous commentary on love and tragedy with appearances
by King Midas, Orpheus and Eurydice, and Cupid and Psyche.
The
UVa-Wise production is directed by Michael McNulty, assistant
professor of theatre. Technical director Jonathon Taylor
designed and constructed the 16-foot square pool of water,
which serves as the focal point for the production.
The
student cast includes: Kofi Dankwah, Rachelle Manel,
Selinda Stanley, Andrew Peloquin, Matt Trgovac, Heather
Duffy, Mary Rose Hanson, Jamie Herman, Matt Carter, Jonah
Adkins, Ryan Perry, Joel Ernst, Amy Brown, and Brittany
Colley.
Because
a few of the myths deal with adult themes, the production
may not be appropriate for children.
General
admission tickets are $5 with UVa-Wise faculty, staff and
students admitted free. For more information, contact
the Office of College Relations at 276-328-0130.
