Seven new
scholarships established at UVa-Wise
Students at The University of Virginia’s College at
Wise will benefit from seven new scholarships recently established
at the College. The new scholarships were announced during
the 13th annual Scholarship Luncheon, which honors scholarship
donors and recipients.
The Alfred and Shirley Wampler Caudill Scholarship Fund
was established by Donald W. Caudill of Norton in memory
and honor of his parents, Alfred and Shirley Wampler Caudill,
both natives of Wise County. A former resident of Norton,
Mr. Caudill is a professor of marketing and director of
the Appalachian Leadership Center at Bluefield State College.
The Alfred and Shirley Wampler Caudill Scholarship will
benefit business majors and students enrolled in leadership
development courses.
The Thelma Meade Hancock Scholarship Fund was established
by Robert Hancock in honor of his mother, a devoted mother
and outstanding teacher in the Russell County school system.
A resident of Castlewood, Mr. Hancock owns and operates
a pharmacy in Clintwood. He is a former business associate
of the late, W.C. Lambert, one of the College’s first
scholarship donors. The Thelma Meade Hancock Scholarship
will be awarded to students from Southwest Virginia.
The Martha Ann Roberts Holyfield Endowed Scholarship Fund
was established by James W. Holyfield and Martha A. Holyfield.
Students must demonstrate merit and financial need and may
major in any academic field. Preference will be given to
graduates of J. J. Kelly High School. The Holyfields, both
natives of Wise, now reside in Denver.
The Stewart McFall and Nellie Mullins McFall Memorial Scholarship
Fund was established by Clintwood natives L. Victor McFall
and Helen McFall in memory of Mr. McFall’s parents,
Stewart and Nellie McFall. Victor McFall, a graduate of
the University of Virginia’s law school, served several
terms as commonwealth’s attorney, and was successful
in the coal industry. His father, Stewart McFall, was a
Freewill Baptist Minister. The Stewart and Nellie Mullins
McFall Scholarship will be awarded to deserving and eligible
UVa-Wise students. Students who are members of a Freewill
Baptist Church in Dickenson County will receive preference.
The James C. Roberson Memorial Scholarship Fund was established
in 2004 by family and friends in memory of James C. Roberson.
Judge Roberson was an extraordinary native son of Wise County
and a widely respected citizen and jurist. A graduate the
University of Richmond Law School, Judge Roberson practiced
law in Norton prior to being appointed to the bench. An
avid Highland Cavalier fan, Judge Roberson could often be
found on the sidelines during football practice. Judge Roberson’s
widow, Frances, is a former member of the College’s
business faculty.
The Susie Sturgill Athletic Scholarship was established
by the family and friends of Susie Sturgill. A lifelong
resident of Wise, Sturgill was vice president and manager
of Jefferson Mortgage Corp in Norton. She was very involved
in community and civic activities, particularly efforts
associated with the betterment of youth in the area. Sturgill
was a long time, caring friend of the College and a passionate
supporter of its athletic programs. The Susie Sturgill Athletic
Scholarship Fund will benefit deserving student athletes
at UVa-Wise.
The Benjamin F. and Sarah C. Sutherland Scholarship Fund
was established in honor of Benjamin F. and Sarah C. Sutherland’s
60th anniversary by their children, Carolyn Sutherland,
Doug Sutherland, and Sarah Foulkrod. Mrs. Sutherland worked
in the Dickenson County School System for many years. Mr.
Sutherland, a 1949 graduate of the U.Va. Law School, has
practiced law in Clintwood for more than fifty years. A
distinguished member of the state bar association and a
recognized authority on real estate titles in Dickenson
County, Mr. Sutherland follows in the footsteps of his father,
Holiday Sutherland, who practiced law in Dickenson County
well into his nineties. The Benjamin and Sarah Sutherland
