For the first time in the College's history, students will be able to attend courses in art, drama and music under the same roof upon completion of the Center for the Arts. This project, which will renovate and add to the current Theatre building, will provide centralized facilities for the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. Included will be classroom facilities for the department along with a black box theatre, an art gallery and a courtyard overlooking the lake.
October 2008 Status: Roof metal framing is 75 percent complete and roof decking has begun. Sanitary sewer trunk line has been installed. Catwalks in the Black Box Theatre are complete. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-in work is underway. Metal framing in the renovated portion of the building is underway.
August 2008 Status: Second floor masonry work is underway. Catwalks are being installed in the Black Box Theatre. Themain air conditioning units have been installed and underground power lines are being laid. The main stairwell to the second floor area has been installed.
March 2008 Status: The duct trench is finished. Footers at the west end of the building have been completed and the gravel and footings for the courtyard are being installed. Wall masonry work for the black box theatre is 90 percent complete.
February 2008 Status: Foundation and masonry and concrete duct trench work continues.
January 2008 Status: Interior masonry work is ongoing and exterior masonry work has begun. Steel reinforcement of footings is underway.
November 2007 Status: Interior masonry work is ongoing. Foundation pier placement is complete. Concrete foundations at the pier placements are underway.
October 2007 Status: Demolition is nearly complete. Foundation pier placement is approximately 25 percent complete with site grading work ongoing.
September 2007 Status: Major structural demolition and site re-grading have begun.
August 2007 Status: Mobilization was completed. Site demolition is nearly complete. Site grading should begin within the week.
July 2007 Status: A conditional notice to proceed has been issued. The construction trailer and fencing is anticipated to be in place prior to students’ return to campus.
June 2007 Status: Quesenberry’s Incorporated of Big Stone Gap was selected as the Construction Manager at Risk for this project.
May 2007 Status:
Final work continues on the modular units to prepare them for use by the Visual and Performing Arts Department during the construction phase. The Construction Manger at Risk will be selected in June.
April 2007 Status: The project drawings have gone through the Assistant State Building Official (ASBO), obtaining authorization last week to proceed with final drawings. The modular units needed to enable the program to operate during the construction process were delivered to the parking lot of the Center for Teaching Excellence and currently are being made operational.
