Contractor:

Site of the former Wise County poor farm and the College's first building when it opened in 1954, Crockett Hall is an essential part of UVa-Wise history. Named for Sam Crockett, a U.Va. extension agent who played a key role in the founding of the College, Crockett Hall was last used as a residence hall several years ago.

Now, this major project will provide a historical renovation to the exterior of the building and rebuild the interior while utilizing many of the components of the original. Upon completion, it will house Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic Advising, the Registrar’s Office and the Cashier ’s Office.

October 2008 Status: All offices have moved into the facility. Work continues on punch list items.

August 2008 Status: On Aug. 25 Crockett Hall received a temporary certificate of occupancy (TCO), which allows the College use of the facility. Installation of furniture items is underway.  Final completion items on the inside and punch list items are being completed. Exterior work is also being completed. Initial office moves will begin in September.

March 2008 Status: Drywall is being installed on all floors of the building. Elevator installation is 50 percent complete with one stairwell completely installed. Fire suppression work is underway on all three floors. Ceiling light rough-ins are underway.

February 2008 Status: Drywall is being installed in the basement and on the first floor. Preparations are being made for the installation of the elevator. Attic duct work and second floor plumbing rough in are complete. Windows are 80 percent complete.

January 2008 Status: First and second floor framing is currently underway. Electrical conduit is being installed on all floors. Attic duct work and second-floor plumbing rough-in is underway.

November 2007 Status: The elevator pit is complete. The roof is 99 percent complete. Attic flooring is complete and the attic HVAC units are being installed. The first floor duct work is underway. Temporary weatherproofing is complete so that interior work can continue during the winter months. Basement masonry wall footers are being poured.

October 2007 Status: The elevator pit is 80 percent complete. The roof is 90 percent complete. Attic flooring is underway and additional attic strut supports have been installed. Rock removal in the basement is complete.

September 2007 Status: Roofing is 70 percent complete. The concrete subfloor has been finished. Outside site utilities work continues. The new strut supports in the attic are underway. Exterior elevation work continues in order to create the sunken garden area.

August 2007 Status: Interior rock removal of the basement level is 95% complete. Structural shoring was completed in areas determined to be deficient. Exterior elevation work continued in order to create the sunken garden area.

July 2007 Status: Demolition is complete in the building, with the exception of the rock removal in the basement. Roof work is about to begin.  Despite the discoveries that many of the structural rafters had suffered severe water damage during the building’s lifetime and that three different fires had occurred in the building during its history, the structural engineer has confirmed again that the rock of the building remains structurally sound.

June 2007 Status:  Demolition work has begun inside the building. Many of the old windows have been removed. Based on the recommendation of two arborists and the landscape architect, three nearby trees in poor condition (an oak, a willow and a sycamore) were removed. Because of this, the benches in the sunken garden will no longer be created from imported Spanish Cypress but will instead be created from the oak tree removed from the site.

May 2007 Status:  Burwil Construction of Bristol, Tenn., was awarded the contract. They have moved their construction trailer onto the site and are scheduled to begin site work during the week of June 11.

April 2007 Status:  The project drawings have gone through the Assistant State Building Official (ASBO). On Thursday, April 26, we will be interviewing and selecting the Contract Manager at Risk who will perform the construction. The asbestos abatement has been completed.
